Kiosk Interface Design and Software

The interface of a self-service application is critical to its success. The process for designing a touch screen interface has some very special constraints and peculiarities.

These considerations can be as obvious as the fact that buttons need to be as big as a large finger for them to be easy to use, or less obvious things like the difference in colours and button states for user feedback.

Concept Design Development

We first start the concept design phase with existing company branding and standards manuals if they exist. The concept design consists of many individual components such as buttons, screens, text styles and widow details. The goal is to produce a set of components that are then to be used throughout the interface in a consistent way. When we have these together we can then apply the branding and colours. This produces the first set of 2 or 3 concept screens. At this point if possible we meet with you in a very interactive session with the concepts.

By the end of this meeting we should be able to see a direction to develop. Usually there are parts of each concept that work well and need to be combined into a single refined design. At this stage our design team works its magic and soon we are now ready to present the final design for sign off.

User Interface Testing

The final stage of the interface design is to use some sample content and our signed off design to create a working version of a small part of the interface. This allows us to make sure that everything works well and that the over all effect is an interface that is very intuitive to use and also pleasing to the eye. At this stage we often do interface testing with user groups.

Experience has shown us that if an application does not have an attractive interface that is easy to understand at a glance users will not spend time with it. Giving people the minimum number of choices and the maximum amount of help makes for a simple application that doesn't get in the way of delivering information or transactions.
